The Retreat at Marketplace
Atlanta, Ga. 2007-2008When Community Life Concepts (CLC) began working with the children at The Retreat at Market Place, it was easy to see that some of the children had difficulty reading, and one child, a second-grader, couldn’t read at all, and had little desire to learn. CLC was determined to reach these children and spark their interest in reading through tutoring and interactive learning. By the end of the school the second grade child was able to write a poem, spell each word correctly and read it out loud. What a joyous day to see him come so far!
Martin Street Plaza
Atlanta, Ga. 2007-2008James was a resident at Martin Street Plaza and a student at Southside High School and was having problems with his grades, attendance and fighting in school. CLC began a mentoring program and met with him several times a week to help provide guidance. During the mentoring program, James expressed his desire to have a part-time job to buy things he needed. The CLC mentor presented a challenge to James that if he could do better in school then CLC would help him find a job. James took the challenge head on and was able to improve his grades and found alternative ways to channel his energy. He was able to get a part-time job with Kroger and felt rewarded with his extra income. James earned his GED and enlisted with the U.S. Marines on July 28, 2008 to pursue higher education and a career in the armed forces.
Bowen Homes
Atlanta, Ga. 2007-2008LaSonya is a 35-year-old mother of two and who left her full-time job to pursue a business venture. After her business partner abandoned her, LaSonya found herself unemployed and homeless, sleeping in her car, changing her clothes and brushing her teeth at gas stations. She went to job training classes sponsored by CLC Resident Services at Bowen Homes and was hired by a reputable cell phone company in 2007.
"The leadership, guidance, and educational incentives that the CLC programs provide to our residents of all ages bridges the gap between management and residential affairs. As the manager of this community, I am humbled to work with such a dedicated, loyal, and persistent group of people that truly understands the overall needs of any apartment community with whom they work."Tonya Nickerson, Property Manager
Longwood Vista Apartments
"As a Community leader, it is not often that I have the opportunity to experience such a dynamic program as the one CLC has in place. The impact it has on the communities is both commendable and noticeable. I have worked in this community for 20 years and know most of the participants personally. It brings joy to my heart to see the positive transformation of these people and the restoration of pride in the community."Gregory Winds, Major
DeKalb Marshal's Department
